57. 承前省略用法一例

【教材原句】

One of you will be a child and the other the grandmother. (p.5)

译文：你们其中一个扮装小孩，另一个扮装祖母。

【用法说明】

One of you will be a child and the other the grandmother. 中的 the other the grandmother 实为 the other will be the grandmother 之省略。因为前面有了 will be，所以后面一句就承前省略了。又如：

The scenery was beautiful, and the acting superb. 布景很漂亮，演出也很出色。

On one side of the window is a mirror, and on the other a painting. 窗户的一边是一面镜子，另一边是一幅画。

Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts. 现在，他健康欠佳，精神空虚，心情忧郁，缺少晚年应有的舒适。

【质疑教材】

询问天气时，英语习惯上用以下两个句型（意思相同，但表达不同）：

What’s the weather like?（用what，其后有介词like）

How’s the weather?（用how，其后没有介词like）
