表示“祝贺”，通常用于 congratulate sb on [upon] sth, 其意为“因为某事而祝贺某人”。如：
I congratulate you on your success. 我祝贺你的成功。
He congratulated us on getting married. 他祝贺我们结婚大喜。
They congratulated her on her election. 他们祝贺她当选。
I congratulated Maria on passing the exam. 玛丽亚考试通过了我向她祝贺。
I had hoped to send him a telegram to congratulate him on his marriage but I didn’t manage it. 我本想在他结婚的时候给他打个电报表示祝贺，但是我没有办到。
注：在美国英语中有时也用for：
He congratulated the team on / for having won all their games. 运动队在所有参赛项目上获胜，他向全队表示祝贺。
有时接反身代词作宾语。如：
You can congratulate yourself on having done a good job. 你的工作干得出色，你应该感到自豪。
注意，英语一般不说：I congrtulate your success.
